STRUCTURE OF INTELLECT (SOI)

A young boy is sitting at a table in a classroom at MindMenders receiving cognitive brain-based therapy. In the background, another child wearing a blue shirt and headphones is also sitting at a desk.

SOI tests and develops the core learning abilities every person needs to succeed in school, career or life. It helps uncover hidden learning challenges so anyone can learn more easily and confidently.

The Structure of Intellect (SOI) is a proven educational system based on the research of Dr. J.P. Guilford and later developed for schools by Dr. Mary Meeker. SOI is built on the idea that intelligence is not fixed—it can be developed. Through a combination of assessments and targeted activities, SOI identifies and strengthens the intellectual abilities needed for success in school and life. MindMenders utilizes the SOI test to evaluate 27 core abilities necessary for reading, math, and other learning areas, then designs an individual’s lesson plan of custom activities and exercises to strengthen any weak areas. A unique component, the Integrated Practice Protocol (IPP), supports brain integration and has shown remarkable results in improving cognitive performance. Unlike traditional schooling that assumes students have the necessary learning skills, SOI identifies missing skills and teaches them directly. Progress is continuously monitored until the student can graduate from the program, equipped with stronger thinking, processing, and learning abilities. SOI programs have helped students from all backgrounds catch up academically, build confidence, and find success in both school and future careers by helping to determine fitting career choices.

OVERVIEW

  • Identifies and develops 27 essential abilities required for academic success, including those for reading and math.

  • Provides customized brain training to strengthen weak areas and boost learning efficiency. A prescriptive, individualized lesson plan is developed using computer data collected for over six decades by SOI.

  • Uses innovative programs like SOI Certified Learning and IPP to support students of all ages and abilities.

  • After every 30 hours of therapy, weak areas are retested to determine mastery and to reconstruct a new lesson plan.

  • When all areas of the brain are above average in efficiency, the individual has completed the MindMenders Program with a brain that is improved for a lifetime.

KEY BENEFITS

When Brooke Carter (name changed), a 9-year-old third grader, came to MindMenders, she was reading and doing math at a Kindergarten level—four years behind her peers. Despite receiving special education services, Brooke hated school and was overwhelmed by tasks that were far beyond her actual capabilities. Initial SOI testing and activities helped, but the real breakthrough came when she began the SOI Certified Learning program. On her first day, a simple exercise revealed that Brooke could not visually or physically process left-to-right movement, a basic skill necessary for reading and writing. With this insight, MindMenders began at a level below her current ability, gradually building her skills and confidence. Brooke started to enjoy learning, arriving at sessions with a smile and a willingness to participate. Within 6 to 7 months, she advanced from Kindergarten to a solid second-grade level in both reading and math. Instead of being five years behind, she was now only one to two years behind, with renewed enthusiasm and belief in her own abilities. SOI helped uncover the root of Brooke’s struggles and gave her a path to real, measurable progress.
